Volvo made for the tuner crowd

“Only the 18-inch, five-spoke wheels serve to warn S4 and M3s of this Swede's brutal nature.”
When you think performance sedan you don’t usually nod your head towards Volvo, because you think well it’s a big box and it’s all about safety. This is very true, but over the years Volvo have created some seriously good rides and if you ask any Scandinavian it’s a top priority to turn one race worthy. During my youth my uncle’s father passed away leaving a small collection of pistols, rifles, planes, boats, and of course cars. When my uncle’s father was buried we decided to sell off the things that would not be wanted by the family. Looking through the house you could see the man was hell bent on always being outside a world map hung in the living your riddled with tacks of all shapes and sizes with small notes and inscriptions. In the yard two boats sat in prime condition covered and awaiting sale. In the garage sat a half finished plane a reconstructed jeep and a Volvo 850 T-5 R. My dad owning two 240 DL’s liked the vehicle immediately and asked my uncle for it he gave his blessing after an exchange of a few thousand dollars and the car was ours. To this day one of my favorite estates ever made, I believe it is because it is an in house hot rod, like a special car for the Volvo owners who have always craved more power and something to fight the Germans with. 10 years later under Ford ownership the R series rides again this time as a force created to fight the good fight against the Germans.
Volvo said that the S60 type R was a rival for BMW’s M3 well that is well utter crap; they tried to sell it to the wrong crowd. BMW M3 drivers are #$@%^&’s and @!#$^)&P*’s. This car is a rival to the softer performers of the era like the BMW 545 M edition, the Audi A6 4.2 and the Mercedes C32 AMG. Basically this car is a good performer, but what it really is, is a different animal. This is a car that you can take to work in soft comfort and take it home in break neck speed. The S60R is actually two completely different cars. A split personality if you will; it’s the best of both worlds. When I took the S60 R for my first test drive back in 2004 it was something that made my mouth water. I loved the way it looked, it is probably from seeing so many 240’s with LS1 swaps, but something about this car was perfect the Hot Rod was back.
The car is understated and safe, simple and yet complex, but only with its electronics nothing from the outside would ever give away its PhD in physics. with the beefed up electronic damping system the s60 becomes the perfect all around daily driver with the ummph you need on the weekends. The classic box look of the Volvo is still there, but with beautiful 18inch 5 spoke brushed aluminum rims with the silver Brembo calipers leaking through the chopped holes of the spokes. Looking around the rear the slight curves of the body kit gives hint of what lurks under the hood of this sleeper, as does the dual tip exhaust that exits through a gap in the rear of the body kit. This is probably the first time I have looked at a mid-level performance car and gone “I will not touch those rims, they look perfect on this car.” That just does not happen. All in all, this entire car is just perfect from the exterior, now its time to see if the interior and engine can keep up with the exteriors subtle good looks. After the keys were passed to me (by a slightly reluctant car salesmen) I peaked inside at the lush interior. The Buckets draped in light brown leather sown together by 3 cord stitching. As I sat down in the cockpit two things jump at you the very interesting manual trans that has replaced the way we all look at the manual transmission. It looks like a ball joint. Instead of the usual jumble of stitched leather there is a seamless brushed aluminum ball (at first look I thought the car was an automatic) it looks beautiful and I am a big fan. The next thing you notice is the dash, the gauge cluster looks like the face of a man’s watch. Its bold and masculine and it’s the loudest part of the car and it screams, “I go fast!” which is perfect, the interior is fantastic it makes into a true sleeper simple on the outside and boisterous and aggressive on the inside. Turing the key the T5 grumbles to life and driving it off the lot I was initially happy with the soft ride and simply brilliant turning radius. Running into my first stoplight I decided to try to discover what this little machine was all about starting by punching the active chassis settings buttons. Three little buttons that live above the air vents marked Comfort, Sport, and Advanced. These buttons supposedly unlock the secret to the performance of this uber Swede. Putting the suspension into advanced changed the feel of the car significantly it did not feel overly stiff, but it did not feel like a Cadillac anymore. Checking my foot placement I decided that “slamming the loud pedal down”, was probably the best thing to do. When the light turned green I sped off leaving only a small of dust considering that the AWD kept me firm and planted on the road, but even though the engine is small a 2.5 liter turbocharged 5 cylinder the car had absolutely no turbo lag a strange and wonderful occurrence hitting 60 in 6 ain't bad either. I figured now is a good as any to find out how the car holds up as a highway cruiser. My observation, its fantastic its not going to be a track monster and it will not beat an m3 in a straight line but as an everyday driver it is just perfect. And as a vehicle of self expression the performance company Evolve welcomes you to it personalized and customized parts turning your 300 horsepower Volvo into a 456 horsepower beast. boosting this sucker to 4.6 sec 60 run making this little sleeper a M3 spanker fulfilling what Volvo and Ford could not. And if your a husband and father the S70 R the S60's avant brother might be a little bit more your speed giving you the 7seater option to take the kids to school and with 300 horsepower and AWD you can get to work twice as fast. then in your wife's town and country.

Mercury Marauder,why?

Anyone can take a look at the 2004 Mercury Marauder and know immediately that it is obviously a police interceptor, a slightly beefed up version of the Crown Vic Squad Car. Looking at its numbers its 0-60 boasts absolutely nothing sliding in at 7.42 sec. Its no super saloon and it can't even keep up with the Civic that sits on my list below. Its interior is well, shit, it looked just like city taxicabs you sit in every day. The dash looks like its still 1994 the radio dials look like something out of the 80's, the steering wheel is the size of a New York style pizza, but that’s what I love about it and that is why it made my list. It was America's last real muscle car. At the time the Camero had just died in 2002 and the mustang GT was pumping out a mere 260 horsepower not in any league with any muscle car of even the late 70's. In that market you would think that the Marauder would prevail, but sales were slow and the Marauder was forgotten with just 11,052 vehicles sold over all. Now looking back I still think it was a fantastic car The engine is a bullet proof, the 4.6 liter V8 will go far past 250,000 miles and will only need a few belts and some oil to keep it running. This little F****er will last forever, It will easily out last every single car on this and the horsepower is a nice touch 302 with 318 lbs.-ft. of torque so you will still be cruising pretty quickly. Granted the power is not huge, but still over the 300 mark and perfectly adequate. The exterior is mean looking the stance is memorable, it looks poised with the massive 18 inch 5 spokes and the full black body was a nice touch. Ford even tinted all the windows giving the car pretense of a sleeper. The hint of silver on the mercury badge is all that could be made out of the front end that adorned the grill, and the fat exhaust that emerges out under the Marauder imprinted rear bumper is the finishing touch. I flat out love the simple touches that made this car stand out from the Crown Vic’s. Even though they probably only stood out to gear heads it made all the difference to me. This car looks good, it sounds good it drive well and is just a blast to swing sideways. The exhaust note is throaty and the wheels smoke and scream when ever you go near the throttle and the trunk is large enough to fit 4 corpses in (always a plus).
Hands down one of my favorite underrated cars on the road today. Plus if the power needs a boost Trilogy Motorsports will throw an Eaton Supercharger on for a couple of grand you will have 525 horses running from your black beauty. The upgrade will pull your 0-60 time down to a mere 4.4 sec that’s super salon beater territory, an M5 could not touch that. And the best part is this car will go for 14 grand at the auction block a steal for such a great ride.

25 under 30K

New and used, these are my down right favorite used and new cars of this price range. Later I will pull a full run down on each probably a little semi-skimmed version of my last two reviews but hell these need to be praised. Now looking down this potentially long list of vehicles many such as the M5 and and the E55 started out in 60 thousand plus ranges as you can see a couple years and 45,000 miles will drop a price tag, but each one of these cars is not only fast but rather practical in their own categories and if you find a good specimen it will be a great vehicle. After the break down I will make my top 5 choices which will include my climate, everyday driving, MPG, 0-60 , and handling.

GTI torquey little monster

This years GTI might have changed much but why fix what’s not broken? As an everyday driver it packs the perfect punch. And the four-door version I was able to test drive was not only a joy to drive fast but also a fantastic city car it put my Mini Cooper experience to shame. Weeks before my own test-drive of the four-door model a close friend took me on a joy ride in his 2008 two-door version. He has had the car for just over 7 months and has gotten very acquainted with its strengths and weaknesses. A week before our joy ride he drove it to New York, a good 1500 miles drive from the heart of Chicago to big apple and back. He said as a highway cruiser it is not only a joy to drive, but the confidence he got from being behind the wheel was palpable. During our little joy ride he punched the hatchback to 85 on lake shore drive to a jam the car between a cab and a slow moving Saab, finding the off ramp he gunned the throttle again. Not only was the pick up impressive but the glass gear box many have claimed stood strong . The breaks were also convincing as the turn ramp was hit at 55 miles an hour not much of a feet for a Ferrari but a 200 horsepower hatchback not bad. I was one over easily, my friends skill behind the wheel aside, this car looked easy to drive and even more easy to drive fast.
During my test drive I looked for the faults since I could not find any during our excursion on the Dan Ryan expressway. Walking around the exterior after the man gave me the keys I have to say that the switch blade key is always fun and the buttons are simple. Looking at the exterior of the hatchback. I realized that even though its small compared to the 5 series I was driving a couple weeks prior, the mass of the vehicle is still noticeable. The trunk set up is a nice touch I love the little VW sign to open the trunk and the massive 18's I choose look great. I do think that the calipers could have been a tad bigger to balance out the size of the rim, but that seems purely ascetic and maybe a tad selfish. Looking over the options list I found that all the boxes that had been checked had pushed the price tag up to a whopping $28,455 dollars. For an 18 year olds first car that is a shocker but as a man in the midst of his fight to the middle this seems like a clear winner. Though the price tag does shadow on a old STI and Evo numbers it is shy of their new outrageous price tags. Taking a clear notice of the front end I do like the grill and the lights the car is jet black and looks menacing with a few upgrades this beast would look gorgeous with tints and a few door handle shaves (time to stop dreaming). Jumping in the car I realized the leather is nice but the stripped cloth package is way more manageable. Since the package I was given had everything its hard to find the draw backs in interior. I find my self always happy with the blue glow that hums from the instrument panel of all VW’s, but I will never get over the feeling like I was still jammed into my high school girlfriend’s Jetta it just always seems so bubbly and the instruments always look flimsy. At 6’1 and 240 I am not a small man by any means and I do find the Fit of the VW’s a tad snug which I cannot say that I felt the same problem in the Mini Cooper S that I drove last month.
After a 5 min fight with the seat controls I found well I hate those. The buckets are snug but not harsh and the iPod-integrated stereo is a definite must have. After getting situated I decided to look at the back seats after I had found my seating position to see if anyone or anything could sit behind me and well that’s a no for large adult male, but a few skinny girls or the kids with the wife. This may be able to work as a family hatchback for short road trips. and after pushing the seats down I found that a photographer or an artist would find the space idle for frames equipment or even a few skateboards.
Getting back in the cockpit and turning over the engine is just what you want to hear every morning before your daily commute, the grumble of the little two-liter is a great way to wake up, the exhaust note is thick and frothy and may be a little addictive. Putting it in to gear, one finds the gearbox precise and a tad forgiving at first. The clutch is simple and hits like a Honda simple and no real kickback. After cruising around in 4th I decided to be 12 again. I ran around town leaving it in first and at the end of its rev range. The torque you get out of this little car is just nuts not a single front wheel drive Honda I have ever driven kicks like this no matter what its redline is. Now as fast as the turbo spins the lag is still there they tried to counter act lag by making the turbo small and easy to jam into the engine bay and with this comes the only real problem the 0-60. The time to punch to 60 is ludicrous compared to its rivals in it price range such as the Mazda Speed 3 and the Cobalt SS. Both hinting the 60 mark in 6.1 sec a clear second faster then the VW. Now according to VW the DSG gearbox will hit 60 in 6.9, but what you really need is just another 60 horses under the hood. This year though VW has curbed its performance version of the GTI the heavy R32 and with that went the 3.2-liter V6 and the AWD system (Probably due to failing sales in the market.) So in the end this car will do what you need hall the gear put the bikes on the roof and cruse through town, but if your looking to street race your friends in their mustangs you might just want to sit on the curb.
Now being a Eurotuner fanatic (see side bar) this car’s potential is truly exploited and pushed to its limits and is shown on their website in all its glory. People have turned these cars into the street performers and show room queens that you would expect. Tuning companies have released many different cooling and turbo upgrades to tide over the thirst of these little hatchbacks.
I met up with a friend in Southern Michigan a few months back working with HPA an American Tuning company specializing in twin turbo versions of the 2004 R32 and the 2008 R32 making them push out 500 plus horsepower and shooting the cars to an unbelievable 0-60 times the fastest being 3.5 seconds. He has his 08 GTI packing 335 horsepower and catching wheel spin threw 2nd. As he talked about his ride I noticed that the car was not only noticeably lower but surprisingly aggressive looking the pearl white paint and blacked out VW badges (front and rear) made the little car look like it would bite. During the course of our conversation he showed me the interior work including a full cage, bride buckets, turbo timer, short throw shifter, and white interior accents. Exterior showed the large Porsche calipers and slotted rotor’s hidden behind a wall of BBS 18 inch beauties, Engine mod’s included a larger turbo engine remapping custom down pipe and turbo back exhaust with a custom mounted intercooler.
Truly any car can be pushed to these limits, but few companies or models have such a religious following that the GTI has.

370Z Japanese Muscle

After a multitude of 350z tests, I found that my running happiness with the power band was not enough. The unrelenting frustration with the flimsy interior, and claustrophobic seating position drove me to a simple conclusion: Even though the 350z is a true boy-racer(this comes with a strong compromise for the plastic 17-year old esc living accommodations) it is still a great alternative to the z4 and mustang GT. Nissan apparently got the message after five years. The carful redesign of the engine and a complete revamp of the interior and exterior (noting the 240z throw back) I can finally say that Nissan's new two-seater is not only a joy to drive, but a fantastic highway grand tourer. Walking around the car the details come alive the new headlamps are at the very least interesting. The elongated hood and sloping rear end gives a node back to the Datsun era and makes the car more mature and less like it bubble shaped older brother. The wheels still reek of the boy racer generation but the massive calipers make up for it with huge disc brakes to shout about its massive performance. Jumping into the car it is easy to see the large and small improvements starting with the steering wheel, the wheel is wrapped with new leather and brushed metallic in-liner instead of the cheap plastic fake metallic center piece that used to preside in its place. The two tone interior draped in tanned leather helps give the car a true muscle car feel and will not embarrass the mid-life crisis owners. That being said I do find that having driven the new G37S I see more in style with the interior the American branch of Nissan and I find that the touch up is a positive for once. and may be the best compromise between the two interiors. The bucket seats are more comfortable then the 350 but still left to be desired on long journeys. Over all the entire interior is taught and precise the dials above the GPS show the time and oil pressure which give it a nice track day feel. The sound system and GPS are easy to use and well placed in the cockpit. and the premium sound sytem does give off a hell of burst of bass. The push start is fun and turning over the large V6 with a push of the button gives off a throaty blip and a little bit of its charm. The engine is a dream with the horsepower output being bumped from 306 to 332 and the even though the torque out put is only 10 higher it still works sending the rear tires spinning ever time you go near the throttle. Nissan also slammed another 800 Rev’s out of the V6 to push the engine to 7 grand instead of its previous 6,200 RPM. The trans is precise and well oiled and the new rev-match on the transmission is a fantastic little selling point to though’s of us that are a little less then perfect on our down shifts. the one problem I may have more then anything else is the exhaust note I drive an 08' Altima V6 much of the time and the engine note sounds very similar almost like a grind not a throaty roar you expect from a two seater heater. Overall the car is a dream to drive even though the suspension is a little to taught on surface roads during everyday driving, but after a few bends and a touch of throttle that is all forgotten .
